What a Genetic Counselor does

A certified genetic counselor (CGC) holds a master's degree in genetic counseling and certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling. They translate genomic data into decisions a family can actually use.

In neurology and brain health, counselors handle APOE genotyping, autosomal dominant Alzheimer's genes (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2), frontotemporal dementia panels, Huntington's testing protocols, and pharmacogenomic findings that affect psychiatric prescribing.
